Executive FunctionExecutive function is a term used to describe a high level conscious cognitive system that controls, influences, manages and regulates other more basic abilities and behaviors, such as attention, memory and motor skills. Executive functions are important for successful adaptation and performance in real-life situations. They allow people to initiate and complete tasks and to persevere in the face of challenges. Executive functions are necessary for goal-directed behavior. They allow us to anticipate outcomes and adapt to changing situations as well as trial and error discoveries. The ability to form concepts and think abstractly are often considered components of executive function. Executive functions also enable people to inhibit inappropriate behaviors and foster social connectedness.
